Pokémon Go has been out for almost a month now, but people are still discovering ways to become a better Pokémon trainer. Unlike most games, Pokémon Go doesn’t really come with a tutorial, and that’s probably making the game more fun for millions of players as they progress in their quest to become Pokémon trainers. Although Pokémon Go never really lets you know, incense is one of the best tools you have for collecting and catching powerful Pokémon. You may not yet know how to use incense to its maximum potential. But first, what is incense and what does it do?

What is incense?

According to Pokémon Go, incense is a “mysterious fragrance that lures wild Pokémon to your location for 30 minutes,” and that’s pretty much it. For 30 minutes, Pokémon visible in your local area on the Poké tracker appear automatically to you. However, it’s important to remember that incense works a bit differently to lures. Unlike incense, which works for you at any location, lures can only be attached to a stationary Pokéstop, and everyone nearby will benefit from them.

How to use incense properly in Pokémon Go

Many people use incense to attract Pokémon when they’re at home or work, and just generally not moving – but that’s really not the best way to use incense.

If you’re standing still, incense will only dish out one Pokémon appearance every five minutes, so it’ll be a measly six Pokémon for half an hour with the app open – hardly worth the battery life or the data. However, when you’re walking, nearby Pokémon can show up at the rate of one per minute, giving you a grand total of a maximum 30 Pokémon per dose of incense.

Remember, though: incense only attracts nearby Pokémon, so make sure you use it near areas with a dense population, such as Pokémon nests or in large towns and cities. When you consider that incense is pretty rare in Pokémon Go – unless you’re prepared to part with your cash – you’ll want to make the most out of it.
